Crafty Tomato Founder Speaks to 180 Students at Connolly Middle School AVID Program

Crafty Tomato Founder Speaks to 180 Students at Connolly Middle School AVID Program

This week, Crafty Tomato founder Charlotte Yiu was invited to speak at Connolly Middle School in Tempe, Arizona as a guest speaker for the school’s AVID program. Over the course of the day, Charlotte presented to six classes, speaking with approximately 180 students about becoming an artist, attending art school, and building a creative career.

The talk, titled “How Did I Get Here?”, focused on Charlotte’s personal journey from growing up in Hong Kong to becoming an illustrator, painter, and small business owner in the United States. The presentation also explored the many different paths that creative careers can take.

Community engagement and art education are an important part of Crafty Tomato’s mission, and opportunities like this allow young students to see how creativity can translate into real careers.

Starting With a Creative Challenge

Instead of beginning with a traditional lecture, Charlotte started the session with a drawing challenge.

Students were asked to draw several things without using reference photos. The prompts included drawing a horse, drawing their favorite food, drawing a place, and drawing something red without using the color red. The students had eight minutes to complete the challenge.

The goal of the exercise was to show that creativity is about observation, imagination, and problem solving. Many students are used to copying images from the internet, but drawing from memory encourages them to think visually and creatively.

For many of the students, this was their first time thinking about art in this way.

From Hong Kong to Arizona

Charlotte shared her background growing up in Hong Kong, a city known for its dense architecture, neon signs, and vibrant street life. The city’s visual culture continues to influence her artwork today.

Later, Charlotte moved to the United States to pursue art and design. The move opened new opportunities and eventually led to her career as an illustrator, painter, and entrepreneur.

Her journey shows students that creative careers can take unexpected paths and often involve major life transitions.

Studying Art on Full Scholarship

Students were especially curious about art school and how artists develop their skills professionally.

Charlotte attended Li Po Chun United World College in Hong Kong, where she completed the International Baccalaureate Bilingual Diploma on a full scholarship.

She later attended Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. At Ringling, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration, with minors in Art History and Film Studies. She attended the school on a full scholarship, graduated with honors, and served as Student Government President.

Ringling College of Art and Design is widely recognized as one of the top illustration programs in the United States.

Charlotte explained that art school is demanding but provides valuable opportunities to develop technical skills, creative thinking, and professional connections.

The Many Career Paths of an Artist

One of the main messages of the presentation was that there is no single path to becoming an artist.

Throughout her career, Charlotte has worked in several different creative roles.

She has worked as a graphic designer, a freelance illustrator and painter, an artist alley vendor at conventions and markets, and eventually as a small business owner.

Each of these experiences helped build the skills and knowledge needed to open Crafty Tomato.

Creative careers often involve experimentation, side projects, and continuous learning.

Is Art School Worth It?

Students often ask whether art school is worth it and whether artists can make a living.

Charlotte explained that talent alone does not determine success in creative careers.

Artists who succeed often combine passion with technical skill, persistence, and the ability to adapt to new opportunities.

Creative fields are broader than many people realize. Careers can include illustration, animation, design, architecture, photography, museum work, art education, and creative entrepreneurship.

Art can be a hobby, a career, or both.

Resources for Students Interested in Art

During the presentation, Charlotte shared several resources for students who want to develop their art skills.

One recommendation was Scottsdale Artists’ School, a respected Arizona institution that offers professional art training and workshops.

Another resource is New Masters Academy, an online learning platform that provides structured lessons in drawing and painting fundamentals.

Students interested in art school were also encouraged to explore pre-college summer programs that allow high school students to experience art school environments and build their portfolios.
